Job Introduction
With its rich and exciting blend of history, diversity, and culture, Medway offers a unique experience to both residents and visitors. We have a strong tradition of leading and delivering on Public Health objectives and we are now looking for a talented, experienced individual who can help drive our work forward.
The Medway public health team is high performing and highly respected in the council, working closely with colleagues in the Children & Adults’ Services and the Regeneration, Culture, Environment & Transformation directorates to enable local residents, as well as council staff, to be healthier.
The public health team here is also unusual in having many of its own provider services covering, for example, smoking cessation, children and adults weight management, healthy eating, physical activity, mental health promotion, and workforce development. Having services in-house means that we can be agile and creative, focussing on what makes the largest impact on the health and wellbeing of the population we serve
In addition, we commission services including sexual health, health visiting and school nursing. The Council has a determined focus on poor health prevention as well as tacking health inequalities and we are working to embed this across all service delivery.
Medway is also one of only 30 local authorities to have an NIHR-funded Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC). With the HDRC, we are building capacity and capability in the council to conduct research on the levers the council has to improve health and reduce health inequalities.
With our neighbouring local authority, Kent County Council, we are co-terminus with the footprint of the Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board (ICB), creating a strong collaborative partnership across the well-defined region of Kent. With local government reorganisation (LGR) the region of Kent will be split into a number of unitary authorities. In most of the proposed models, the area that is currently Medway Unitary Authority would become a large part of a North Kent Unitary Authority, roughly double the current population size of Medway Unitary Authority and likely to be the largest council in the region of Kent, presenting a great opportunity for career development and to have a substantial impact on the health and wellbeing of a large population.
To help deliver our work, we are seeking an outstanding consultant in Public Health. Based within the Public Health division of the People Directorate at Medway Council, you will work closely with the Director of Public Health, members of the public health team, the wider council and colleagues across partner organisations.
As a Public Health Consultant, you will play a pivotal role in improving the health and well-being of the communities in Medway. You will support the Director of Public Health in achieving core public health objectives, including reducing health inequalities, protecting health, and contributing to the quality of local health and social care services.
Alongside your excellent leadership skills, you will be able to demonstrate a strong track record of working in public health. Developing powerful relationships with partners and stakeholders you will influence local commissioning to deliver better health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
